Will Artie Lange Return to Howard Stern's show ? be 'the greatest,' but it's an 'awkward situation'

Artie Lange, Howard Stern's former sidekick wants to return to the radio show

by Olivia A.
Too Fat to Fish
Artie Lange, the comedian who was Howard Stern's former sidekick returned to radio this week and said that returning to "The Howard Stern Show" would be the "greatest thing ever."

Lange disappeared from the Stern show in January 2010 ... after a private medical emergency.

But last night, Lange appeared on a Fox Sports Radio show hosted by his friend and fellow comic Nick DiPaolo and explained he had been spending time at a rehab facility in Florida to get himself sober.

A caller told Lange he couldn't wait for Lange to return to the Stern show ... and Artie replied, "That would be the greatest thing ever."

Lange continued, "Listen, I was on the greatest show of all time for about 9 years ... and I put them in a very awkward situation to say the least, so, what am i gonna do?

"But I love them all and they were great to me. I appreciate it."

"That would be the greatest thing ever, but listen, I was on the greatest show of all time for about nine years, and I put them in a very awkward situation, to say the least, so what am I going to do?" Lange said on Fox Sports Radio, Punchline magazine reports. "But I love them all and they were great to me."

Lange joined his friend and fellow comedian Nick DiPaolo on Fox Sports Radio, where he was guest-hosting for Tony Bruno. Lange answered questions from fans, who have missed the raunchy funny man since he went on hiatus from Stern's show in December 2010.

Lange left "The Howard Stern Show" after dealing with drug addiction and a suicide attempt. Lange told fans on Wednesday that he had been getting sober at a rehabilitation facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Lange has appeared on television series like "Mad TV" and discussed his drug use in his standup routines and book, "Too Fat to Fish."

Stern's other longtime sidekick Robin Quivers revealed in May that she would consider leaving "The Howard Stern Show" to host a TV show.

Stern's radio show airs on Sirius XM satellite radio and in March, the shock jock sued Sirius over a stock options agreement. In December, Stern signed a new 5-year deal with Sirius XM, which agreed to continue to broadcast his show and other programs on his Howard 100 and Howard 101 channels until the end of 2015.
Artie Lange says returning to "The Howard Stern Show" would be "the greatest thing ever," but he also acknowledges the difficulty of the situation.

"Listen, I was on the greatest show of all time for about nine years, and I put them in a very awkward situation, to say the least," he told a caller this week during an appearance on Fox Sports Radio with fill-in host Nick DiPaulo, who like Lange is a stand-up comic. "So what am I gonna do?"

Lange hasn't been on the Stern show since December 2009, before a January 2010 suicide attempt in which he stabbed himself repeatedly with a knife. His mother found him bloody in his Hoboken, N.J., apartment and called 911 in time to save his life.

Stern told Rolling Stone earlier this year that Lange had offered to come on the show to explain what happened, but the talk-show star seemed reluctant to accept the offer.

"I don't even feel strong enough within myself or that I'd be doing the right thing by him, because I don't want to do the wrong thing for Artie," Stern said, adding, "I just want Artie to stay alive."

Lange returned to the stand-up stage last September with a performance in New York.

"I love them all, and they were great to me," Lange said Wednesday about the Stern team. "I appreciate that."

Stern has been a radio host since the 1970s and his show has aired on television. He moved to satellite radio in 2006 following a dispute with terrestrial radio stations that had carried his syndicated show over alleged indecent programming, which led to Federal Communications Commission fines of $2.5 million.

Moments from his career and beef with the FCC and his then-boss were showcased in the 1997 comedy film "Private Parts". Stern has not disclosed his new salary that was promised in his new deal. His previous 5-year agreement had promised him $500 million.

Howard Stern opened up about absent co-host Artie Lange

March 21, 2011: The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM satellite radio

Howard Stern (HS), Robin Quivers (RQ) and Fred Norris (FN)

HS: “It doesn’t mean that Artie will never be on. It meant that—what I was trying to convey in the article, and the way I answered that was very truthful. I am very confused by what went down with Artie. Robin knows this and I’ve discussed it with her. I’m very freaked out that I didn’t pick up on the signals. I’m very freaked out with what he tried to do to himself. I think Artie is a sensational talent and a terrific guy—a real good heart. You know that. I mean, there are times that Artie would come in here and raise money for people--"

RQ: "Or just give money to people."

HS: “And I didn’t realize his level of confusion until the end—until the last couple of months.”

(Caller asks for more information)

HS: “A lot of people say to me: ‘When’s Artie coming back? When’s he gonna come on? When’s he gonna do this?’ And really, you know what? I just can’t even process what went down with Artie, and I really don’t understand it. And, as I said in the article, the one thing I want to see is Artie stay alive. And I realize that him being on the show—he kept trying to tell me. He kept saying to me: ‘This is gonna end badly. This gonna be bad. I’m not happy. I mean, It’s the best job I ever had, but…’ I couldn’t even understand what he was trying to tell me. So, that confusion—it’s very hard for me to understand what the right thing is to do and I kind of just throw my hands up in the air and say: ‘I am not knowledgeable enough to handle what’s going on with Artie.’ I’m just not.”
Too Fat to Fish

“I don’t feel responsible. I love Artie, but I don’t know how to handle that situation and I think it’s a private matter that has to be dealt with him and whoever his close people are—his family I assume or a psychiatrist or something. And I’m telling you, that’s real life and death stuff. I mean, here’s a guy I work with for all these years and have tremendous respect for—tried to kill himself. Tried to plunge a knife into himself and end his life. This is no joke. And I don’t know how to handle it. I’ll be honest. And if you know how to handle it, you’re a better person than I am. You think—‘Hey! Put Artie on the air! Throw him to the wolves!’ Is that a good thing? I don’t know! You wanna know something? I don’t have a f***ing clue, but I DON’T want to be responsible.”

Artie Lange: Jack and Coke

“And you know what? I have so many f***ing s**theads who say to me: ‘Have Artie on! Come on! Have Artie on’. And then the second you have him on someone will say to me: ‘You f***ing irresponsible s**t! You’re taking a sick guy and you’re using him!’ and I’m just like: ‘You know what? I’ve had enough’. F**king forget it. No mas! No mas! I throw my hands up in the air! I don’t know what to do. I’m admitting it. I don’t know what to do. You know what to do? Have him on YOUR show. I don’t know what to do.”

Artie Lange - It's the Whiskey Talking

“Of course I want him on the show. I want him on the show—Why do you think I worked with him all those years?”
Dirty Work [VHS]

RQ: “It’s not wanting to hurt him or do anything that would adversely affect him.”

HS: “I feel protective of him and I don’t know what to do and I think Artie’s gotta do his own thing now and figure it out. He’s in a bad place. And I only say this cause it’s what he’s admitted it on the air before he left. He’s in a bad place. He said it. He said: ‘Everything’s gonna end badly.’ What can I tell you? I’ve answered it enough. Of course I’d love to have Artie on the show and have everything be fine.

RQ: “We’d love to be able to have Artie on the Show and have fun with him.”

HS: “If I gotta be looking over my shoulder every minute to make sure that he’s alive, I mean. What am I gonna do? I gotta do the show. Listen, he’s a great guy--a tremendous talent and my heart goes out to him. I feel terrible for him. But my days with Artie are useless. They’re over. This is bigger than me. I’m not a psychiatrist. I’m not a doctor. I’m not God. I don’t know how to handle that. I’m just some dude doing a radio show. It’s not for me.”

“You know, I didn’t pick up on it. I didn’t know. I mean, I knew there was stuff wrong, but I thought he had it under control--shows you how off I was. So, my judgment is not to be trusted in this. There were other people around here who had much better judgment than I did. They go: ‘Howard. Don’t you see? The guy’s on drugs. The guy’s in trouble.’ I said: ‘He comes in and does his show. He seems to be fine. I think some of it’s sort of an act, you know?’ You know, the tough guy thing? But it wasn’t. I misread the entire thing and that freaks me out.”

RQ: (joking) "Well, you’ve been misreading Fred for years."

HS: (laughing) "What am I misreading? Please tell me! I think he’s fine."

FN: (serious again) “I think you’re making the wise choice. I mean, to anybody who says: ‘When’s Artie coming back or whatever. I mean, it’s very clear that he felt there was no other way out. Maybe he wanted to quit the show and he didn’t know how to do it so, he really went overboard."

HS: "Yeah, I think there’s a lot of truth in that. I think what Fred’s saying is right, that [Artie] kept saying to me: ‘This is gonna end badly. You’ll see.’ Like he wanted me to—“

RQ: “So, he tried to end it several times in different ways—“

FN: “And I think he wanted you to make the choice for him. I don’t think he wanted to pull the trigger on himself. He’s like: ‘I can’t walk away from this. It’s really good. I’m up. YOU fire me!’ I mean, I really think he wanted to put your back up against the wall.”

RQ: “Even the thing about the weekend gigs. You know, he was like: ‘Those are killing me but I can’t stop.’”

HS: “Yeah, and it’s like, you know, I was put in the position of being the dad so to speak, and say: ‘OK. You can’t go out and do gigs—and you can’t do this..’ and I’m like ‘Oh my God—this is a full time job managing this situation.’ “

"By the way, it was NEVER like that, until the end. I mean, the guy was a consummate pro."

RQ: “But at the beginning he was saying it was going to end badly.”

HS: “Yeah. He did say it.”

RQ: “So, you know, nobody could have foreseen from there to here, where we would wind up.”

HS: “I know everybody wants some sort of closure on the show like it’s a sitcom or something, but sorry.”

RQ: “This isn’t a movie.”

FN: “This is real life.”

Donald Trump Gives Artie Lang good wishes and talks about Artie's violent suicide !

Donald Trump is sending good wishes along to Howard Stern Show sidekick Artie Lange who is currently on hiatus from the show while he recovers from a violent suicide attempt in early January.

Trump gave the Artie Lange quote during an interview with New York Magazine in response to Lange's interview for the Magazine's '21 Questions' column in November 2009. When the Howard Stern Show second banana was asked: "What do you think of Donald Trump?" he responded: "I like him, but he owes me $42k from the last time I was at the Taj."

Donald Trump's statement on Artie Lange was a lot less flip: "I like Artie too. He's a really good comedian. I hope he's going to be okay." New York Magazine reporter Tali Yahalom said Trump ended the interview abruptly after the Artie Lange question.

The Howard Stern Show has been without Artie Lange since the comedian was ordered to take time off for health reasons in December 2009. Since news of his failed suicide attempt by stabbing in January, his future with the Howard Stern Show has remained uncertain. Both Howard Stern and Sirius XM Vice-President Tim Sabean have stated that Artie Lange's job at the Howard Stern Show will be waiting for him when and if he decides to return.

Follow the Howard Stern Examiner
Artie Lange's dark and painful secret was finally exposed by the New York Post early Thursday morning with a story in their 'Page Six' gossip column that Artie Lange attempted suicide by stabbing himself nine times.

Howard Stern waited until 7:10AM on Thursday morning's Howard Stern Show broadcast to talk about the Artie Lange 'Page Six' story, and even then he spoke about it reluctantly.

"I don't even know why I don't want to read it on the air," said Howard Stern.  "Maybe I'm in some kind of denial or something."

Howard Stern couldn't read more than a line of the story revealing the suicide attempt and the method and then put the story down.  "I'm so upset about this story," said Stern.  "I'm pissed off that the story got out there."

Artie calls out again ??

GEORGE IS IN, ARTIE IS OUT Howard started off the show welcoming George Takei to the studio and noting that Artie was out today, as he's been – oddly enough – 4 of the 10 weeks George has sat in as the show's announcer: "We were out Friday and Monday. It's fine, but...I've tried to figure out whether Artie's on drugs or not because I'm always wrong." Howard later asked the crew if they thought Artie was sick or back on drugs. George gave Artie the benefit of the doubt: "I think health-wise he's very fragile." Fred disagreed, but only in the hopes he was proved wrong as he has in the past: "He's on the sauce again." Robin was also skeptical: "I want him to be sick but I don't think he is." Benjy speculated: "But that might mean he was using before and got off again." Jon Hein was generous: "I think he's exhausted and therefore sick." Howard said he was sick himself – of betting in favor of Artie's sobriety and being repeatedly proved wrong. STAFF TRAVELS George said he'd only be in today and tomorrow, as he would be speaking at Drexel University in Philadelphia on Wednesday about his childhood. George added that Brad was traveling with him, as he usually does, unless George is headed somewhere freaky, like Romania. Howard thought Brad wouldn't like Vegas, as posters advertising Scott the Engineer's upcoming DJ gig at Club Pure were plastered all over Caesar's Palace. Scott came in to laugh: "I'm surprised I didn't scare people away." BETH O IS BACK HOME Howard reported that Beth O was back home after being away taping her role as a judge on ABC's “True Beauty,” explaining that the show took 8 men and 8 women and told them they were competing in a beauty pageant to be the face of Las Vegas. The twist was that they're judged on their inner beauty. Beth O got in Saturday afternoon: "You would've thought the two of us never saw each other...we had this whole big reunion. It was sexual, of course." Howard said the sex was bizarrely passionate: "We hadn't seen each other in a while so it was filled with massive neediness." ERIC THE MIDGET STALKS BETH Eric the Midget called in to say he saw Beth O at a Criss Angel show in Las Vegas over the weekend. Howard confirmed Beth's presence at the show and asked what Eric had done besides stalk his wife. Eric said he'd also "checked out the different hotels and played the slot machines a little bit." Eric did say that he wanted to go say hi to Beth but his parents didn’t want him to because they were afraid she’d be mean to him. howardstern.com

TOMS RIVER — Bad boy radio personality Artie Lange was charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant and with careless driving today after police responded to a minor traffic accident. triggerAd(1,PaginationPage,10); A police detective discovered Lange at the scene of a minor motor vehicle collision at Silver Bay and Brand avenues, reported at about 1:30 a.m., said Capt. Steve Henry. Lange, 41, scheduled to appear at the Ocean County Library here Saturday night, was charged with driving under the influence by Patrolman Brian Jarka based on an assessment done at the police station, Henry said. "There was no indication that he was under the influence of illicit drugs," Henry said. But he was under the influence according to the psychological and physical assessment, Henry said. Artie Lang Arrested for DUI in Toms River NJ?? ( Car Accident )

Fans of 'The Howard Stern Show' know all about Artie Lange's ongoing tales of his battle with substance abuse. It appears there's another chapter to the story. According to TMZ, Lange was arrested on suspicion of DUI Friday in New Jersey. Law enforcement sources told TMZ the comic was arrested in Toms River after he got in a car accident. Lange has mentioned on the air several times that Dr. Drew Pinsky was jumping at the chance to get Lange onto VH1's 'Celebrity Rehab' show.

Howard stern staff shirt less??

WHICH STAFFER LOOKS BEST SHIRTLESS? Frequent caller, Johnboy, called in with an unusual and creepy request, he wanted to see who looked best with their shirt off, and, after a lot of resistance, the crew eventually broke down. Richard was creepily complementary to Artie ("Look at how gorgeous you look.") and Fred ("Wow. Look at Fred. Fred looks amazing."). Fred laughed at Sal's little-girl boobs: "He looks like the cover of the Blind Faith album." Richard was also impressed with Howard: "You have a nice chest, Howard. How many people wouldn't want to feel Howard Stern's chest?" Sal was disgusted with the whole scene: "Benjy's tits go around to his back!" JD and Jason then came in to show off their doughy physiques. Richard laughed at JD's "Body by Burger King" and said Jason's body hair made him look like a fat Wolfman. After surveying everyone, Robin declared Fred the winner, citing his "upper body development." Richard still wasn't finished: "Can we see whose chest looks best covered in baby oil?" howardstern.com

Artie and Lisa G Blowout !

Howard started off the show saying he belittled his psychiatrist yesterday and was starting to feel bad about it: "He told me to bring my anger into the room and I said, 'Ok. Here's my anger and I'll direct it at you'...I'm just a horrible person and I've come to the conclusion that I should quit therapy." Artie said he was also struggling with his shrink: "I can remember anyone’s phone number. It's weird...but this guy I gotta keep looking it up. It's like I'm fighting it." Howard referenced the shrink Robin used to see: "Did she quit you or all therapy? I have a feeling she just quit you." Robin claimed the woman quit completely - and then revealed she'd been replaced: "I do talk to someone. A counselor. I'm not telling you who...she's a doctor. I'm not in therapy but I have someone I talk to when I need guidance." Howard asked if the woman was a life coach, but Robin denied it, saying the woman was a psychologist: "I use her when I need her." Later, Robin repeated: "It's not treatment." ARTIE & GARY'S MEDICAL OUTLOOK Artie said the tests his "wellness doctor" ran on him last week all came back great: "Even my liver improved." Howard asked Artie to be honest about how long he's been totally off drugs, so Artie said, "Everything everything? Its been about 4 weeks...heroin is Christmas Eve. Opiates has been about two months." Howard doubted Artie's claims, but Artie insisted he was being truthful. Howard brushed him off: "I don't care anymore. You take care of your stuff and I'll take care of my stuff." Gary noted that he went to the doctor yesterday to have a sonogram (a procedure usually performed on pregnant women) to take a look at his kidney stone: "One of my kidneys is a little backed up so I have to go back in and have [the stone] ultrasound blasted again." ROBIN TAKES ARTIE'S SIDE Robin agreed that the Howard100 News' scrutiny can make her feel like the people who work for the show are not on her side, but Howard disagreed: "We have to have a playful attitude about everything we do." Artie disagreed: "I'm somebody's son. Tell [Lisa] to choke on it." Howard thought Artie was upset about something else: "Something's eating you today." Artie blamed his diet: "Because I'm not eating...I didn't sleep well last night. I'm a little cranky. But get this broad away from me. She's creepy." ARTIE & LISA G FIGHT! Lisa G reported that she called Dr. Drew yesterday, and Drew told her that Artie's self-administered attempt at rehab would fail - but refused to confirm Artie's claim that "Celebrity Rehab" had approached him to appear on the show's next season. Artie was angered by the story: "Why would he? Are you a dumbass? Why don't you call the producers?" Howard asked why he was being so mean to Lisa, and Artie blew up: "I hate her guts. I don't like her...f’ her. Someone better f’ her...Bitch." Howard told Artie to calm down, but Artie continued: "F’ her. Keep her away from me. When I'm near her, I'm disheveled." Artie blamed Howard for the problem: "You started a news department because you live clean...she's creepy...she'd love to waddle in here on her spindly legs and say, 'Artie failed!'...I think Lisa would like me to fail. I think Langford would love it. They would come in here and report with glee." FINAL ARGUMENTS & AN APOLOGY Fred asked if Lisa called Dr. Drew or if Drew called her, so Lisa G explained that she was the one who called: "I call people all the time about things that happen on the show." Artie didn't care: "Don't ever do it about me again. Unless you want me to hit on you...you call somebody and that's a story? You're a regular Jimmy Breslin." Lisa said she wouldn't stoop to Artie's level, and Artie laughed: "I don't want you on my level. I want to be on a level all by myself." Lisa said she had one more story, so Artie joked: "What? Did you call Mars about Fred or something?" Later, Robin admitted it was nice to see the news department get theirs: "Its about time they got a little bit [of flak]...they make life miserable around here." Scott the Engineer also came in to ask how Artie could be upset with a little scrutiny after lying on the air so many times, and Artie agreed: "Scott, you made a great point, and I officially apologize to Lisa G."

Miss HowardTV of the Year for 2008

Howard welcomed Brenda Acevedo, Miss HowardTV of the Year for 2008, to the studio and congratulated her on the new title. Brenda nervously stuttered a response, and Howard thanked her for the ego boost: "In high school I would've cut my nuts off for you." Brenda showed the crew the diamond necklace she won as part of the prize, and Artie complimented where it fell: "It hangs right in the middle of your big, pendulous breasts." Brenda asked Robin how she felt about her breast-reduction surgery, so Robin told her to be careful: "I've seen some breast-reduction jobs that are just heinous." Brenda said she was still considering it: "When you come out and you're all natural, some things just aren't where you expect them to be." Brenda also said she was huge Artie fan - but had a serious boyfriend, a professional poker player.Despite this cockblock, Brenda asked if Artie would like to feel her breasts (with her boyfriend’s permission of course). Never being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Artie jumped up and gave them a squeeze. Brenda was thrilled: "It's Artie! I don't think I'll realize it until I watch it back and think, 'What the hell did I do?'" Howard asked if Artie used the right amount of pressure, but she wanted more: "He was too soft." CHRISTIE KANE MASTURBATES A LOT Howard then welcomed Christie Kane, Miss HowardTV for April, who spoke with a strange affect. Howard asked if she was hard of hearing, but she denied it: "No, I'm just from Brooklyn." Howard then ran Christie through her sexual history, including the time she and a friend took turns tying each other up and performing oral sex. Christie laughed that she even hooked up with a drunken Hasidic man at a recent party: "I'm just a very sexual person." Christie claimed she masturbates ten times a day and was once caught mid-diddle in a tanning booth. Emboldened, Howard wondered if the crew could take a look at her boobs, so she whipped 'em out. Robin asked if it was a good view, and Howard answered quickly: "Yes, it's good! They're two boobs!" Christie then jumped on the Sybian and went for a ride: "It vibrates a lot." After a scream-heavy ride, Christie had trouble standing: "That was so f’ing hot...I wanna take it home." howardstern.com
